Mat Pilates

What is Mat Pilates?: Mat Pilates is a body conditioning routine done on a mat which places emphasis on spinal and pelvic alignment, breathing, and developing a strong core. Each hour consists of placing a high level of concentration on the positioning of your body in different poses. Students learn to control each muscular movement while keeping the body centered. A flow of movement will develop as skill levels increase. Precision focus on doing one particular and perfect movement at a time while breathing a full inhalation and complete exhalation combines a low impact workout with a high caloric burn.

What are the Benefits of Mat Pilates?: Build flexibility, muscle strength, and endurance in the legs, abdominals, arms, hips, and back. Practitioners also enjoy improved coordination and balance. Although Pilates Mat bears a close resemblance to yoga, the main focus is aligning the spine and strengthening the core.

What to Bring: Pilate mats are thicker than the normal yoga mat and you are welcome to bring your own from home.  However, instructors will provide any equipment and blankets necessary prior to the beginning of class.  Your instructor will need to see your body and the alignment of your bones to determine which muscles are engaged.  Loose, comfortable attire is preferred over anything baggy. Pilates is usually done barefoot.

Fitness Level:  Adaptive to all levels. Beginners welcome!  The therapeutic and restorative qualities of Pilates Mat are geared toward anyone with severe tightness, injury, chronic back pain or disability.
